We live in a society where working 9 to 5 is considered as the dream job for many people. And since every parent wants their kids to take the safest path and do not want them pursuing entrepreneurship because it is a risky business and in contrast to it, becoming a doctor or an engineer is the safest road people want to pursue.
Hence they fail to inculcate in their children some entrepreneurial skills at an early age which can give them a great boost in their entrepreneurial journey. But as they say, with great risks come greater rewards, entrepreneurship is the way forward if you want your children to be independent, financially stable and confident.
An entrepreneur, by textbook definition means a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business. So, following is a brief summary of some of the skills which you should inculcate in your children at an early age.
Financial Independence and Stability
Financial independence is something which goes a long way in infusing a sense of confidence and economic security in a child. Kids learn that they can fulfil their own wishes, maybe buy that bicycle which they want or buy some candies for themselves if they have money of their own. Once children of age 10 or above understand what it means to be financially independent, it can serve as an impetus in their yearning to be financially independent and standing on their own feet as soon as they get a chance. This also reduces burden on parents and there are numerous examples where teens and youth can earn enough where they bear not only their personal expenses but can also pay their college tuition fee and contribute to household expenses, too.
Think Out of The Box: Be Creative
Creativity is something a lot of people are born with but it is also something which can be honed over time. A creative mind is the biggest asset of an entrepreneur. Knowing where to invest, what startup is needed by the market and predicting market trends are the skills which should be in the bag of every entrepreneur and children if taught this at a young age, can benefit from it extremely well. Therefore, Children should be encouraged to think out of the box, be innovative and come up with new ideas.
Problem Solving and Design Thinking
As an entrepreneur you often hit a wall and there is no apparent solution. At this point you need problem solving and troubleshooting skills. Teaching problem solving skills to children and teens will help them in their future journey as entrepreneurs because being an entrepreneur is not only exhilarating but demands shrewdness and a deep grasp of affairs, at times.
At these times proper analysis of the problem at hand and then devising a strategy for it solution is what will come handy. Children should be taught to think intuitively in case of problems and come up with ingenious solutions on their own.
For this you need to stop meddling in your children’s affairs and let them come up with a solution on their own.
Strategy Making Ability
It’s important to teach children that laying out the initial roadmap of their task and devising a blueprint of their future journey will really help them because they are in the position to tailor their initiatives to make them suit their end goal. In this regard, if children are taught to learn strategy making games from a young age like Chess, they can learn how to think in anticipation and if possible tackle imminent problems tactically.
Time Management
They say time is money and rightfully so. We see a lot of adult entrepreneurs burning midnight oil and spoiling their own health in pursuit of money, only to spend all of the earned money back on their health. Teaching children how to strike that perfect balance between work and rest is pivotal in their growth as a businessman. Teaching them that at the end of the day they are just children and they don’t need to jeopardize their health or education in exchange of monetary remuneration, is important.
Resilience and Persistence
Last but not the least, resilience and persistence are perhaps the most important attributes of any entrepreneur. If your children learn this at an early age, it is going to come really handy. As an entrepreneur, life is not a bed of roses. There comes times when either the market is down or your skill is not in high demand or your product is facing tough competition. In all of these conditions it is important to not lose hope, stay persistent and not lose confidence in your worth and self-esteem.
So, as a parent you should strive hard to inculcate the above mentioned must-have qualities of an entrepreneur but slowly and gradually according to a particular child’s abilities. As, each child is different in his/her own unique way. We should infuse these abilities in young children in an organic way so that they grow up to be successful yet happy entrepreneurs who know their self-worth and also know how to get the value for their worth.
